This is a picture of my dining table, a cosy corner to welcome a visitor. The lamp shines on the guiding lights on the placemats, symbol of safety and sign-posting, two important features in palliative care. My initial encounter with Dame Cicely was on the first annual Cicely Saunders Memorial in February 2006, six months after she passed away. It was a life- changing encounter leading me into a PhD on ‘Living one’s dying’ and changing career into hospice and palliative care. Thank you Cicely, and all who are guiding lights to her living legacy.
