Balfour M. Mount
Once, in speaking to me about suffering, Cicely quoted Hutchinson, “There is a light you see when it is darkest of all.” For her, that light emanated from the idea of a God who is in suffering with us. She observed, using John Austin Bakerʼs words, “Oh Bal, all the evil ever done has been done to God. The hands that hold us in existence are pierced with unimaginable nails.”

The candle, on the glass table where I meditate, and the eagle feather given at a crisis crossroad by a colleague, are daily reminders of Cicely and of healing connections.
