Virginia Gumley
This is my bedside light in Lahore. It is a very comforting light and the items on the table have symbolic significance:
The Russian Icon represents my passion and work in Russia particularly Ulyanovsk Hospice, the picture of the homeless cat “Spice” who demanded I adopt him, and the silk print in the photo frame represents my life here.
Meeting Dr Saunders in the 1980’s in Northern Ireland was a source of great inspiration and a professional turning point. I moved to London and to St Christopher’s Hospice where I was for many years a colleague of Dr Saunders. From there my path took me to Russia and to Pakistan in 2001.
I can say that Dr Saunders’ vision of Hospice Care and caring for cancer patients and their families has inspired, guided and shaped my professional life.
